Private International Law

Private international law governs legal relationships between individuals or companies when an international element is involved.

This may be due to the different nationalities of the parties or to the fact that the relationships have legal effects in different States.

This branch therefore has consequences for all other areas of law and comes into play both during the negotiation phase, depending on whether it is appropriate to apply one or other legislation to a legal relationship and to choose the court or tribunal before which disputes are to be resolved, and during the litigation phase, depending on the law applicable to the resolution of the dispute and the court with jurisdiction to decide the dispute.
